Further Improvement Works Planned for Rhyl Promenade

Rhyl Promenade is set to benefit from a fresh round of improvement works designed to enhance its appearance, safety, and enjoyment for visitors and local residents. The programme of upgrades will be coordinated and delivered by Denbighshire County Council’s Streetscene department, with funding support from both the Coastal Defence project and the Shared Prosperity Transitional Year 4 scheme.

The announcement comes after a series of recent enhancements to the seafront, which included the renovation of the four ponds along the promenade. These earlier works were funded through the Shared Prosperity programme and have already contributed to making the area more attractive and welcoming.

Following detailed site surveys, the council identified several areas in need of repair or refurbishment. This latest phase of works will address those issues and ensure that Rhyl Promenade continues to be a key attraction for both locals and tourists.

Coastal Defence Project Works

Funding from the Coastal Defence project will be used to complete several important tasks along the promenade, including:

  • Replacement of corroded rails and panels – The new installations will be painted to match the existing style, ensuring a consistent and visually appealing finish.

  • Restoration of the seagull sculpture – This popular landmark will undergo treatment to remove corrosion, repairs to welds and joints using anti-corrosion materials, and a fresh protective coating to prolong its lifespan.

  • Painting of columns and rails near the Events Arena and Sea Life Centre – Both lighting columns and adjoining railings in this busy area will receive fresh paint to improve their appearance and protect them from the elements.

  • Soft landscaping – Areas along the sea defence wall will be seeded and planted with soft landscaping to add greenery and improve the overall look of the seafront.

Shared Prosperity Funding Works

The Shared Prosperity Transitional Year 4 funding will be focused mainly on improvements within the Events Arena area of the promenade. Planned works include:

  • Upgrading the curved seating shelter – Corrosion issues will be addressed to make the shelter safe and appealing once more.

  • Removal of unsafe roof canopies and support posts – Surveys have deemed these structures unsafe, and their removal will also help address antisocial behaviour that has been occurring within the space. The seating area itself will remain for public use.

  • Painting of decorative steel panels – These will be painted to match recent refurbishment works, giving the area a unified and fresh look.

  • Repairs to damaged coping stones – Two areas where coping stones have been broken will be reinstated or replaced to maintain safety and aesthetics.

Council Statement

Cllr Barry Mellor, Denbighshire County Council’s Lead Member for Environment and Transport, expressed his enthusiasm for the project:

“We are pleased to continue improvements along the Rhyl Promenade through the funding we have been able to access. This work will complement areas that have already undergone improvement through the direction of Streetscene to further enhance this important part of Rhyl.”

Boost for Residents and Tourism

The Rhyl Promenade is a focal point for both the community and visitors to the town. These improvements aim to create a more enjoyable and accessible environment, encouraging more people to spend time in the area and supporting local businesses along the seafront.

With enhanced seating, safer structures, fresh landscaping, and restored public art, the works are expected to boost the promenade’s appeal, especially during peak tourist seasons.

The council has confirmed that the programme of work will be carried out as quickly as possible, with the aim of completing all tasks before the winter period begins. This will ensure that the promenade is ready to welcome visitors in its refreshed state for the next holiday season.

By combining practical repairs with visual enhancements, this project reflects Denbighshire County Council’s commitment to maintaining and improving one of Rhyl’s most important public spaces.
