Two local primary schools in Rhyl are currently undergoing major roof upgrades as part of an ongoing Council project to modernize school buildings across the area.
Work is taking place at both Christchurch Primary School and Ysgol Emmanuel, funded through the local authority’s Schools Capitalised Maintenance Programme and managed directly by the Council’s Building Maintenance Team.
What’s happening at Christchurch School? Now on its sixth and final phase of improvements, work at Christchurch is focused on the flat roof sections:
- Felt & Insulation: Installation of new, hard-wearing felt roofing alongside upgraded thermal insulation.
- Windows & Skylights: Replacement of 47 roof windows to match newer windows already on-site, alongside complete modernization of the school’s skylights.
What’s happening at Ysgol Emmanuel? Now entering its fourth phase, current work at Ysgol Emmanuel targets the pitched roof above two front classrooms:
- Out with the Old: Outdated clay tiles have been stripped away to make room for 120mm modern insulation.
- New Look: The section will be finished with a durable metal roof structure, matching recently upgraded sections elsewhere on the building.
Long-Term Benefits
The Council says the upgrades will improve energy efficiency, boost structural integrity, and drastically cut down on future repair costs for both sites.
Speaking on the ongoing works, Cllr Diane King, Lead Member for Education, Children and Families, said:
“This work is part of our ongoing schedule to improve our school sites, bringing enhancements to their efficiency and safeguarding the future integrity of the school roofs at the same time. Both primary schools will see this work finish in the Autumn.”
- Roofing contractors are scheduled to complete all work across both school sites by this Autumn.
