Revamped Rhyl Promenade Set to Welcome Visitors This Summer
Rhyl’s iconic promenade is preparing to welcome back residents and visitors this summer, following an extensive programme of improvements carried out as part of the Central Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme. After months of essential work, the newly reimagined and raised promenade will officially reopen to the public on Thursday, 15 August.
The multi-million-pound project, designed to protect the town from future flooding and extreme weather events, has completely transformed this much-loved part of the seafront. The upgrade is not only about safety — it’s also about creating a vibrant, accessible, and attractive space for the community to enjoy for years to come.
Promenade Elevated for Flood Protection
One of the most significant changes is the raised ground level, a measure that forms a key part of Rhyl’s sea defence strategy. Pre-cast concrete steps have been installed, alongside improved drainage systems and a newly poured surface to withstand the harsh coastal conditions. This elevation is expected to provide a strong barrier against storm surges, protecting nearby homes, businesses, and public spaces.
Accessibility has also been prioritised, with the installation of new access ramps to ensure that the promenade is welcoming to everyone, including those with mobility needs and parents with pushchairs.
Street Enhancements and Safer Spaces
To create a safer and more inviting atmosphere, new street lighting has been installed, along with modern street furniture, flood gates, and handrails. These additions are designed not only for practicality but also to enhance the look and feel of the seafront, making it an appealing destination day and night.
Councillor Jason McLellan, Leader of the Council and Lead Member for Economic Growth & Tackling Deprivation, said:
“We are delighted to announce that the prom in Rhyl will reopen to the public on August 15th. The work undertaken as part of the Sea Defence project has been vital in protecting our coastline, homes, and businesses. We would like to thank the public for their patience during this period. The project is almost complete, and we look forward to everyone enjoying this fantastic new space.”
New Interactive and Recreational Features
While the core construction is complete, some exciting features are still to come. The promenade will soon host a variety of interactive and leisure installations, including:
-
An outdoor seaside workout zone for adults
-
Games and musical play panels
-
Ocean-themed imaginative play equipment
-
A “Find the Native Marine Creatures” interactive game
-
Ground graphic fitness challenges and interactive play zones
These additions will encourage visitors of all ages to stay active and engage with the coastal environment in fun and educational ways.
Celebrating Local Creativity with Public Art
Public art is also playing a major role in the promenade’s new look. Led by artist Ffion Pritchard, a series of community-inspired murals will be installed along the new coastal defences. These colourful artworks are being created in collaboration with local groups, ensuring the finished pieces reflect Rhyl’s identity and spirit.
Linked to Wider Regeneration Projects
The reopening of the promenade is just one part of Rhyl’s broader regeneration efforts. The nearby Drift Park play area is currently under construction and is set to reopen in September in its original location, but with a brand-new design chosen by the community.
Other recent developments in the town include the reopening of the Queen’s Market, which has already seen excellent visitor numbers since its launch, and the much-anticipated Strand Cinema, set to further boost Rhyl’s leisure and tourism appeal.
Councillor McLellan added:
“This is a really exciting time for Rhyl. With the promenade reopening, Drift Park returning with a fresh design, and the success of the Queen’s Market, the town is experiencing a fantastic period of renewal. These projects are about building a safe, welcoming, and thriving future for Rhyl.”
Looking Ahead
The improvements to the promenade are expected to draw both locals and tourists, helping to support the town’s economy while also protecting it from future climate-related challenges. The combination of robust sea defences, attractive public spaces, and engaging activities means the Rhyl Promenade will once again be a centrepiece of the North Wales coast.
The official reopening on 15 August marks a significant milestone in the Central Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme, showcasing what can be achieved when safety, community, and creativity come together.
