New Drift Park Play Area Reopens on Rhyl Promenade with Nautical Makeover

Families looking for things to do in Rhyl can now enjoy the new and improved Drift Park Play Area on Rhyl’s seafront. The much-loved attraction officially reopened on Friday, September 19th, with a larger celebration planned later this month.

The play park has been completely transformed with a vibrant nautical theme, chosen by the community after local consultation events and more than 200 online survey responses. Children from Ysgol Tir Morfa and Christchurch School also helped shape the design, giving feedback on the type of equipment they’d love to see.

As a result, the refreshed Rhyl promenade play area now features:

    • Extra swings, including a popular double swing

    • Interactive sensory boards

    • A thrilling Cone Twister

    • A “track rider” zip-style ride

  • Additional seating for parents and carers

In total, the play zone boasts over 55 play features, including a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, ocean-inspired play panels, an inclusive seesaw, and a huge pirate-ship slide with accessible DDA steps. The park can accommodate up to 170 children at once, making it a top spot for family days out in Rhyl.

And it’s not just for the kids — brand-new outdoor gym equipment has also been installed alongside the playground, offering free fitness options for adults. Both projects form part of the wider coastal defence improvements along Rhyl’s promenade.

Councillor Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said:

“I’m delighted to see the new Drift Park Play Area open to the public. This inclusive, community-led design provides a safe and exciting space for families, and I’d like to thank everyone who took part in shaping it.”

With its fresh look, accessible features, and seaside location, the Drift Park Play Area on Rhyl Promenade is set to become one of North Wales’ must-visit attractions for both locals and visitors.
