Rhyl toilets part Denbighshire’s Public Toilet Refurbishment Scheme
A major transformation of Denbighshire’s public conveniences is officially moving forward, with Rhyl leading the charge. Thanks to a successful rescue package and a new funding model, several local facilities have been saved from closure and are receiving much-needed modern makeovers.
While budget constraints initially threatened the future of public toilets across the county, collaborative efforts between Denbighshire County Council and local town councils have secured their future. To fund the upgrades and ongoing maintenance, a new entry charge is being introduced, supported by direct financial contributions from community councils.
Rhyl Facilities Upgraded First
Rhyl is at the absolute forefront of this rejuvenation project, benefiting from early investment through the Pride in Place Impact Fund (PiPif).
The community and visitors are already seeing the benefits, with extensive refurbishment work officially complete at two key locations:
-
The Events Arena toilets
-
The Old Golf Road facilities
These busy coastal spots have been fully modernised to improve the experience for residents and tourists alike.
The investment in Rhyl doesn’t stop there. A third major project is scheduled for later this summer, with the Rhyl Town Hall public toilets set for a full refurbishment. To allow the upgrade to take place, the Town Hall facilities will temporarily close on July 20, with plans to reopen a completely refreshed space on August 8.
County-Wide Rollout Schedule
As Rhyl celebrates its completed upgrades, the refurbishment scheme is rolling out to the rest of Denbighshire. Work is currently winding down at Prestatyn’s Barkby Beach facilities, which are expected to reopen on June 27.
The upcoming temporary closure and reopening schedule for the rest of the county includes:
-
Rhuddlan (Princes St): Closed June 29 – Reopens July 18
-
Rhyl Town Hall: Closed July 20 – Reopens August 8
-
Llangollen (Riverside Park): Currently closed – Reopens August 14
-
Prestatyn (Nant Hall Rd): Closed August 10 – Reopens August 29
-
St Asaph: Closed September 1 – Reopens September 19
-
Coronation Gardens: Closed September 21 – Reopens October 10
-
Nova: Closed October 12 – Reopens October 31
-
Llangollen (Market St): Closed November 2 – Reopens November 21
(Note: Completion dates may be subject to minor changes depending on weather and external factors).
Community Collaboration Saves Vital Services
Because public toilets are a non-statutory service—meaning local authorities have no legal obligation to provide them—skyrocketing costs in education and social care originally left these facilities on the chopping block.
Councillor Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, praised the teamwork that kept the doors open:
“Thanks to the positive energy and collaboration with the city, town and community councils, we were able to keep most of the public facilities open. This refurbishment programme will greatly improve the facilities moving forward for future use by residents and visitors to the county. I’d like to also thank everyone for their support and patience while this refurbishment work is carried out.”
